Barrie, has written a book that falls into two parts which link together seamlessly. His family story is interesting and well described. His travels around the world, often linked to his role as a teacher, are wittily described and it is interesting to see the family growing up through the book. For me the real value in this book is his commentary on teaching, his trenchant views on the purpose of education and the way he describes his enthusiasm for his work. It would be good reading for all young teachers to ensure they understand that it is not data that makes the world tick but people and their interactions and growth. I found myself agreeing with him throughout. I had the benefit of working with him for five years at Newman School, where he finished his career, and although in both our 40 year careers five years is only a brief time I shared his reflections with joy. The book reflects his personality as I remember it well. If you are an English teacher or any kind of teacher take this on holiday with you and it will revitalise you I promise.
